
This splendid picture shows PS Lord of the Isles (I) taken from the bridge of PS Woolwich Belle circa 1890/5. The funnel of Woolwich Belle at this time was retractable in order for her funnel to be low enough to go under the bridges in the Pool of London. A close look at the funnel on the left of this picture shows the design quite nicely. The image comes from a recently discovered glass plate negative and shows the two steamers in the Thames Estuary near Southend on Sea
