This card comes from the collection of Dr Joseph Griffin. Dr Griffin was born just outside Glasgow, trained as a GP and moved to Stevenston on the Ayrshire coast, where he spent much of his leisure time cruising around the Firth of Clyde. As a young man he enjoyed frequent trips "Doon the water" and was an enthusiast on everything to do with Clyde steamers. He passed away recently aged 75 and I am grateful to his son Derek for allowing me to show the card here.

Redgauntlet was the largest North British steamer at the time of her launch and she was built for the Rothesay service. In 1909 she was transferred to the Forth until the joint railways agreement caused her redundancy. She was then sold to the Galloway Saloon Steam Packet Co. Iin the First World War she was requisitioned for minesweeping duties and purchased by the Admiralty in 1917. After the war she was sold for use in Algeria and was broken up in 1934.

Comments:

Lady Clare was a typical deck saloon steamer and served on the Craigendoran to Gareloch service, where she replaced the old steamer Gareloch, and on the Greenock to Helensborough service. She had a fairly uneventful career. She was sold in 1906 to the Moville Steamship Co Ltd for use on the summer service between Londonderry and Moville and was used for tendering duties to liners calling at Lough Foyle. She was requistioned for use as a minesweeper in the Great War. In December 1918, she was returned to Londonderry and was withdrawn from service in 1927. After being laid up for a period, she was finally broken up in 1928 at Dumbarton.
