Comments:

Designed for the Portsmouth, Southsea and Ryde service to the Isle of Wight, Sandown was well fitted out, with a large observation lounge for third class passengers and she had a service speed of 14.5 knots. She could carry 974 passengers. Sandown was a sister of the still surviving PS Ryde and she also undertook excursion work. She has a full length promenade deck, forward and aft saloons with dining facilities on her lower deck. She, along with her sister, served as a minesweeper and anti-aircraft ship in the Second World War. Coal burning until the end, she was deemed to be too outdated for the increasing need to carry cars and was withdrawn and broken up at the end of the 1964 season. This splendid picture is displayed with the kind permission of Adrian Clarkson and shows PS Sandown in the Solent in August 1963 en route to Portsmouth. The image comes from a Kodachrome slide taken by Adrian's father Wilf.
