Buillt in 1866, with a length of 149.8 feet PS Scarborough went straight into service with the Gainsborough United Steam Packet Company and was registered at Grimsby. Her oscillating 2cyl. engine gave her 52RHP and was manufactured by J.Penn & Sons, London. This delightful photo has kindly been supplied by George Robinson and comes from the Waterways Museum, Goole archives. During the summer season, when there were visitors, small paddle boats such as PS Scarborough operated as excursion steamers for what was undemanding work and easy but much needed money. Off season, they were used sometimes as trawlers and also for towing sailing vessels in and out of harbours, where navigation could be awkward in certain weather conditions. In the season PS Scarborough operated excursions from Scarborough to Whitby and Bridlington on alternate days, giving passengers time ashore to explore the respective locations. PS Scarborough was scrapped in 1914. I am grateful to George for the picture and additional information on this little paddler.
