Scotia was an iron paddler of individual appearance, having large paddle boxes and a raised forecastle. For Captain Buchanan she operated on the Ardrossan to Arran route. Her machinery was rather old fashioned, even when new, and she was regularly outclassed by the opposition's steamers, particularly Duchess of Hamilton. After struggling on for a while she was offered for sale to the Caledonian Steam Packet Co in 1890, who declined to buy her. Later that year, however, the Duchess of Hamilton burst a condenser pipe and Scotia came to her aid, but help was declined, the CSP preferring to wait until a tug arrived. Scotia was sold for use on the Bristol Channel in 1893 and was taken into the Campbell's fleet in 1899, when her owners were absorbed by the Campbell empire. She lasted only a few more years until she was scrapped in 1903.
