Some Steamer Guidebooks, Posters, Souvenirs and Signs

When not undertaking ferry duties, the steamer companies could make significant contributions to their profits by undertaking day trip excursions to visit the large liners that were docking at Southampton. Here, such an excursion was arranged by the Southern Railway steamers PS Southsea and PS Whippingham in August and September 1934. What a treat it must have been to see these magnificent liners if one was on holiday Portsmouth. Not bad value for 3/6 including admission to a liner, surely worth the extra shilling more than a non landing trip!

The trip arranged for Thursday 30 August to see the liner Carinthia was cancelled as the liner was "not available for inspection" and alternative trips on PS Southsea to Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor, and on PS Whippingham to Bournemouth were hastily arranged at the last moment.
