PS Strathmore (later PS Harlequin)

Builders: Russell & Co 1897

Propulsion type: Paddle, compound diagonal

Owners: Capt. J Williamson,

Service dates: 1897 - 1908

Tonnage: Gross

Comments:

Replacing the old paddler Glenmore, PS Strathmore was a smart looking steamer and was built with plating up to her bows. Her main routes were from Glasgow to Rothesay and the Kyles of Bute, although for a couple of years at the turn of the 19th century she was employed on the Fairlie to Campbeltown service. In March 1908, after a short career on the Clyde, she was sold as a tender for the Admiralty and was renamed Harlequin, operating on the River Medway at Chatham and Sheerness. During the Great War she was used as a minesweeper out of Swansea and Strathmore lasted until 1943 when she stranded in the River Medway and was scrapped.

I am grateful to Frank Lakiere for supplying this picture.
