I began building the ABBITT family tree seriously at the start of 2003. The project has rapidly expanded to include related surnames from both my side and my wife's side of the family. The database continues to grow steadily through on-going research and also from contributions made by newly-found relatives and other much-appreciated contacts.

Research to date has shown that at the beginning of the nineteenth century the ABBITT family was primarily located in the Deptford area of Kent (now part of south London). Their descendents have since spread out across south-eastern England with significant groupings in the Maidstone area and other groups located from Cornwall to Staffordshire. Further afield, the UK ABBITTs are known to have emigrated to South Africa and from there to Canada and New Zealand. And there is always the tantalising challenge to link the UK ABBITTs with those in the USA...
