| Recently I was very lucky to add another
old brewery to my British collection when I acquired a beermat from Hepworth & Co.
Ltd. of Ripon in North Yorkshire. The company was taken-over by Vaux and Associated
Breweries of Sunderland in 1947 and brewing must have ceased soon afterwards. This issue
is probably from the 1930's. Its centre design features a spur with the slogan "
Steel As True As Rippon Rowels" |

For it I traded beermats
from the Old Albion Brewery of Sheffield and Hartley's Crown Brewery from West Cowick in
Humberside. The Old Albion Brewery was acquired by the Worksop and Retford Breweries in
1939 and ceased brewing eleven years later. |
| The Old Albion beermat, I think, is one of
the most attractive of UK pre-war issues but not as rare as the Hepworth issue. The
Hartley beermat is from the 1950's, probably issued not long before the company's takeover
by the Hull Brewery in 1957. |
