Here are some
questions from Fernando Cardoso in Portugal.
Who Brews.......
Baum Bier (Germany)
This is the Grünen Baum Brauerei, founded in 1622 in
Biberach. Thanks to Christian Dufrasne.
Dessauer Bier (Germany)
The Dessau/Dessower brewery in Dessau, Germany. The
brewery was founded in 1865. Three of its brands are Altes Dessauer, Dessauer Castor and
Dessauer Hell. (Christian again!).
L'Illoise
Jean Claude Bouygues tells me that these beers are
produced by the Brasserie Métreau in St. Aiguilin in France.
Mas (Spain)
The Mas brewery is in Tenerife. (Christian).
Red Eye
The Mansfield Brewery in the UK brews a beer of this
name, but I understand that is an American brew called Red Eye. Can anybody enlighten us
further?
Red Rock Extra Special Cider (UK)
A brand of the Taunton Cider Co. (George Morrow,
Belfast).
Scandia Gold Strong Export (Denmark)
Christian tells me that this beer is from a
daughter company of Faxe in Denmark, but he doesn't have any more information.
St. Christopher Alcohol Free
This was produced by Allied Breweries (now
part of the Tetley-Carlsberg group) in the UK. It was also sold in Canada (and if anyone
has spares of coasters issued over there, I'd like to trade!). UK collectors suffered a
series of beermats with slogans like "Rudolph Without The Red Nose" and
"Summertime Booze Without The Summertime Blues". Say no more!
Weissen Burger Pilsener (Germany)
This was brewed by the Weissenburger
Brauerei in Lippstadt, which closed in 1989. The beer is now brewed by the Paderborner
Brauerei Haus Cramer in Paderborn. A big thank you to Markus Splett for this.
And finally, can anybody tell us how brews and/or
distributes Miller in Europe?
The answer is probably that it is several breweries,
each in its own country. I looked at the bottles of Millers Genuine Draught in our local
shop and it was "Brewed under licence in the UK. Distributed by Scottish
Courage" (who are one of our national brewers).
