My father's
family came from Luton, which is the largest town in Bedfordshire. This tour covers the
beermat-issuing breweries of the county, other than J.W. Green (later Flowers Breweries)
which has its own dedicated tour.

Let's start in the county town of
Bedford with Charles Wells Ltd. They originally brewed in the town centre but in 1976 they
celebrated their centenary by moving to a new "state of the art" brewery on the
outskirts of town. They have issued many attractive
beermats. The one on the left, with the old star fish trade mark, is the oldest in my
collection and probably a pre-war issue (suggested by the thickness of the beermat and the
printer's name "Tresises, Burton"). |
