J.W. Hemingway who brewed on the York Road, equalled Melbourne's beermat output, but were a tiny, family-owned concern who relied on their six public houses and a club trade. The company was founded in 1866, but was Tetleys acquired it in 1967 after the death of the owner.
hem4.gif (41199 bytes) This is the earliest known Hemingway issue, collected by somebody who thought that the best way to store beermats was to cover them in glue and stick them to a door. Aaagh! The back is in an even worst state! I have not been able to decipher the writing, but it could include the date July 1927.

Below are eight of the designs that the company used over the years. The blue and red mat in row one is a pliadek, the only one that I have in two non-white colours. The square mats are front and back of the company's last issue in 1966.
