IL KILT, I TARTANS E I CLANS
 Cognomi come Mac Donald, Campbell, Mackintosh, Mac Lean, Mackenzie, Mac Gregor,
Macbeth, Cameron, Ross, ecc, rivelano la discendenza di una persona dai capostipiti di un
determinato Clan (famiglia). Ogni Clan ha un Tartan (sarebbe il particolare e personale disegno
scozzese, appunto diverso per ogni Clan, famiglia), registrato ed ufficiale, solitamente in
due o tre versioni: il tartan per il kilt da giorno, quello da campagna, ecc.
Nella Gran Bretagna del XVIII secolo erano popolari quanto lo e' oggi l'IRA...
I loro kilt, i tartan e le cornamuse erano irrimediabilmente collegati dall'opinione pubblica
agli attacchi giacobiti all'autorita' Hannoveriana del 1715, 1719 e 1745 e, nel
1746 vennero messi al bando, addirittura "pena la morte", fino al 1782.
Sir Walter Scott e il successo dei suoi romanzi risveglio' la simpatia del pubblico e
dell'aristocrazia nei riguardi del cosiddetto "tartanismo".
La visita di Re Giorgio IV a Edimburgo nel 1822, "diretta" proprio da Sir Walter Scott
(deciso a dare un tocco altamente fantastico all'avvenimento) fu decisiva: Scott porto' a
Edimburgo decine di capi clan minori delle Highlands, ognuno col suo seguito agghindato in
tartan, e li mise in bella mostra nei cortei.

Il vero colpo decisivo tuttavia risale al 1858, quando la Regina Vittoria e il principe
Alberto comprarono il castello di Balmoral come residenza estiva e l'arredarono usando
tartan "Balmoral" creato appositamente (da Alberto). Dopo di che la mania inglese per la
Scozia delle Highlands non conobbe piu' limiti. |

In fondo sarebbe bello se anche noi potessimo avere una identita' cosi' identificabile come
quella dei clans scozzesi.
C'e' anche il lato negativo, pero': ancora oggi i Campbell e i Mac Donald non si
risparmiano frecciate e rancori per qualcosa accaduto centinaia di anni fa.
Se decidete di venire in Scozia, ricordate di non fare MAI una grande gaffe: confondere il
termine "Scozzese" con "Inglese", o dire "Inghilterra" quando
intendete "Scozia": c'e' ancora risentimento per il tentativo
di annientamento degli Scozzesi da parte degli Inglesi.
Fino a pochi anni fa a Inverness c'era un bar dove era vietato l'ingresso agli Inglesi....
In Scozia nessuno oserebbe usare il tartan altrui e se proprio non ne avesse uno potrebbe
usare uno di quelli definiti "liberi" oppure, molto piu' caro, crearne uno personale
e registrarlo presso la Scottish Tartan Society.
A Comrie esiste il "Museo del tartan" dove si conserva il registro di tutti i tartan
e ve ne possono ammirare oltre 400.
Ad ogni clan corrisponde un tartan, ma anche un motto distintivo: per esempio il clan dei
Mac Donald di Clanranald ha un tartan molto elegante e il loro motto e' un vero urlo di guerra:
"Contro chi osa"; il tartan dei Chattan, di color senape e il motto e' "Non
toccate un gatto se non col guanto".

There is even a negative side: still now the Campbells and the Mac Donalds are not saving thrusts
one to each other for something happened hundreds of years ago.
If you decide to come to Scotland, anyway, remember not to do the following GAFFE: confuse the term
English with the term Scottish and vice-versa or to say England when you need to say Scotland.
Unfortunately there is still resentment for the fact that in the past the English tried to annhilate
the Scots.
Until a few years ago in Inverness a pub exposed the warning that "English are not welcome".
In Scotland nobody would dare to wear somebody else's tartan and if, actually, without one,
it is possible to choose between the so called "free tartans", otherwise he could, spending some money,
create a personal new one and register it at the Scottish Tartan Society.
In Comrie in the "Tartans' Museum" is the registry of all the existing tartans and
it is possible to see 400 different ones.
Each clan has its own tartan, and even a distinctiv Motto. For example the clan of the Mac
Donald di Clanranald has a really elegant and their Motto is a real war cry: "Against who dares";
the Chattan's tartan is in mustard color and their Motto is "Do not handle a cat without gloves".
