Warsaw, London (Croydon) and Porto : the most recent photograph series in the Tramscape Tramway Photograph Database

Tramscape has an extensive collection of tram photos, nearly all from the camera of Gordon Stewart, who has travelled extensively to capture trams in both the centres and little-known suburbs of many of Europe's great tramway towns and cities from the late 1970s up until the present day.

The photos are primarily intended to illustrate trams in their environments, the city surroundings, the track alignments and the tramstops served, to provide a detailed snapshot of tram systems at given points in time. The aim is to have a record of as much of each route of the tram system as possible - something not necessarily available from the numerous other sources of tramway information on the internet. With the ever changing cityscapes, the photos are becoming an increasingly interesting historical record. The photos are intended to be attractive pictures in their own right with well-balanced views of tram and surrounding architecture and street life. No particular attention is paid to illustrating the specific features of tramcar design other than to appreciate the cars for what enthusiasts know them to be.

The internet now makes this important collection easily available to tramway enthusiasts and students throughout the world to complement the large amount of information available elsewhere on the internet. The Tramscape photograph catalogue includes dates, tram numbers, photo locations and direction of view and can be viewed or downloaded from this site in spreadsheet form to allow you to search for specific photos or merely browse at your leisure. Thumbnail size images are available to view on-line for all photos in the catalogue

As it is impossible for Tramscape to provide detailed information about so many tramway systems, links are provided to external websites : to those of the tram operators and regional transport unions and those of other enthusiasts who report directly on their local tram systems. Follow these links for timetable, route and fare information as well as network maps and news items.

Latest Report : Track Construction for Line 1 at Florence, Italy

Florence April 2008.JPG

FLORENCE, ITALY : April 2008

Despite having been authorised for ten years, line 1 of the new tram system in Italy's magnificent Renaissance city is still nowhere near ready. We have a look at the current state of construction works on the north bank of the River Arno.

We also look at the proposed alignment for extending the tramway closer to the city centre than the current planned terminus at Stazione Santa Maria Novella - the route which has caused so much protest by many sections of the local community

Get Further Information on the Internet - the "Links" page

This website does not intend to offer up-to-date news or detailed analysis of tram systems. That would be impossible and there are already numerous good sources on the internet. Tramscape's service is intended to fill a gap in the availability of material on the internet - detailed route photography.
On the links page there are links to other private sites whose scope is complementary to that of Tramscape and most sites will provide an extensive links page of their own for further browsing. Links are also provided to tramway operators' sites for official information (news, maps, fares etc) to help you plan your own visit.
