MGF 2002

After six years and one or two specials along the way it is time for a major overhaul and update of the MGF, There have been rumours throughout the summer of what is being proposed but nothing has so far been released officially. However industry sources are adamant that we will be seeing a supercharged version of the VVC engine, apparently turbo charging would have been too hot for the car, fitted into a re styled body shell. The supercharger should produce about 220bhp putting it some way above the current Trophy 160 special. The vehicle is currently under the codename of X40 but  when it is released I'm sure MG will come up with a more suitable title. This will be the top range model and not a special as the current Trophy 160 is.

Spyshots of what is believed to be the new nose and grill for the 2002 re vamp seen in France.

SpySpyshot of the squared off rear valance - I don't think the GB sticker is complulsory.

Body work has been "squared off". The rear valance is far more boxier than the current curved lines as is the front nose cone - looking more like the X80 grill and nose. The side air pods and sill have also received the square treatment. It is not clear what will happen to the interior of the car at the moment. The re vamped MGF should be reaching the showrooms by Spring 2002 with any luck. On a more sombre note I wonder if this could be the last in the run of MGF variants - due tot he size of the engine compartment it is impossible to put a bigger engine in it so could we be seeing the end of the line before too long? Bearing in mind that it is still Britains best selling sports car MG Rover will have to come up with something pretty special and at a reasonable price (not £50,000 !) to replace it.
