The replacement for the MGF is now taking up some time at the MG design team desks. The car probably has only a few more years productive life in it now and then it will be time to produce a brand new roadster. The question what will it look like - the answer could be the X70 and X71 projects.
The X70 will be the roadster version - aimed at the under £20,000 price tag it will replace the F in competing against the MX5 and Z3 sports cars (or any updates planned by Mazda or BMW). It is believed that the KV6 engine will be used in a 2.0litre form producing 160bhp and the 2.5litre unit producing 190bhp. The plane is for it to be front engined and rear wheel drive.
The X71 2+2 coupe version will be more expensive and aimed at the Audi TT market but should produce more power per tonne than the Audi.. An option on build could be using a shortened Qvale Mangusta jig which given a projection date of 2004 for the new models could be the simplest option. The planned output will be 15,000 roadsters and 7,000 coupes per year.
