MGBGT

AKX940K - 1972 - 1800cc - teal blue - beige/brown seats and upholstery - recessed front grill - rostyle wheels.

I brought this car about 1981 from Keith Bretton who was then selling MG's from a garage in Cobham in Surrey. I part exchanged my white Ford Capri complete with power bulge and black vinyl roof to disguise it's underpowered 1600 engine for a real sports car.  The MG was the only choice. Incidentally Keith Bretton Cars are still trading but now situated in Tolworth, Surrey.

We had some great trips in it, mainly touring England and Wales. Somehow we managed to squeeze all the camping gear in the back. The "hatchback" certainly had it's uses and with the back seat folded forward there was just about enough space.

The car has a special place for us as the picture of it decked out in lipstick and ribbons will testify. This was the car that Liz and I drove off to our honeymoon in.

Only had one minor mishap with it and that was whilst camping in the New Forest - those low wooden posts they insist on planting everywhere got in the way as I was reversing and I managed to put a nice dent in the front nearside wing. Curses. Still a little application with a rubber hammer and things were soon almost right as new !.

Ah.... What a handsome young couple !

Finally the imminent arrival of our first born prompted the exit of the MG. It really would have been a bit on the awkward side with prams, push chairs, nappies, wife, baby seat, baby etc all fighting for space. I sold it to a mate who kept it for a short while. Unfortunately the dreaded rust worm had already got a pretty good hold on it by this time and the inner sills were suffering as were the rear wings . The worm rapidly consumed the car from there on and eventually it was sold for parts to Richardsons in Staines. I always harboured a little hope that someone may have bought it for restoration but sadly I've since discovered that it has, indeed, passed on.

If you want some more on the MGB then we have a new roadster now in the family which may be getting it's own pages soon but in the meantime look here for a couple of photos.
