| GEMMA HAYES -
Could be one to challenge Polly Harvey and Beth Orton in the indie kid
favourite female slot - now produced by Dave Fridmann with a Mercury Prize
nominated album and doing some scorching live shows - watch her go !
GOLDRUSH - a new band from Oxford playing Americana tinged with Beach Boys Harmonies. Have recently had a Fridman remix single out which has been gaining an awful lot of airplay. HEM - From New York - an 8 piece country based outfit with a singer, in Sally Ellyson, to die for - one of those rare crystal clear pure voices - Songs range from country to folk to modern ballads not out of place on teenage movie soundtracks. The Arlenes - Husband & Wife alt.country duo with the emphasis more on country BUT they are north London based and the UK's best bet for alt.country/Americana stardom. Cracking good debut album out now. LINCOLN - A UK outfit featuring an unusual line up of brass instruments augmenting and alt.country setting with a British twist - latest mini LP has Kibokin has some great tracks with the band sounding like U2 at times and veering a little uncomfortably close to the Beautiful South at others. They show promise in an area where there is not too much UK competition at the moment. WITNESS - Wigans finest - initially pushed as a "British REM" their debut certainly did have similar overtones but they re located to Bristol and have produced a staggeringly good second album - Under a Sun. Sadly dropped by their label Island they are currently in the wilderness. PORCUPINE TREE - progressive revival - if it actually happens then this band will be spearheading but they aren't - quite. JANUARY - One of the few gems signed to Alan Mcgee's poptones label but sadly not being hyped mentioned very much - this could be the band that Oasis strived to be - check out their debut album. - Dropped off the radar
Ones That did make it as predicted here ..... RYAN ADAMS - a superstar in the ascendant - currently enjoying a golden prolific period and will drag Americana screaming in to the charts eventually - self styled musical genius but the hype is actually pretty close to the truth in his case !
