Virgin Gorda, "or fat virgin" was so named by Christopher Columbus in 1493, because the mountain, Gorda Peak, creates the impression of a reclining pregnant lady. Known for its excellent snorkelling directly from its many white sandy beaches, Virgin Gorda is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. | |||||
| The largest of the British Virgin Islands is the capital island, Tortola.
Virgin Gorda, the second largest island with a population of some 2,500, is
about ten miles long and varies up to two miles wide. There are 20
beautiful beaches, the most famous of which is "the Baths", with tranquil
pools, caves and grottoes formed by the sea among giant boulders. Other
beaches, which are seldom crowded, and near to Dapher’s House are Spring Bay,
Devils Bay and Savanna Bay. The island is cooled by Trade winds. The
subtropical climate is delightful with daytime temperatures ranging from 80
to 90 degrees F. There are several excellent restaurants on the island some with live music and dancing. Getting There Major airlines and some charter companies fly into St Thomas (a U.S. Virgin Island) or San Juan, Puerto Rico from Europe and the U.S.A. You can also travel by plane from Puerto Rico (45 min.), St. Thomas (20 min.) or Tortola (10 min.). By sea, frequent ferries from Tortola take 30 minutes, or 2 hours (three times a week) from St. Thomas. Passports are needed and for driving, a valid driving licence. The local currency is the U.S. Dollar: credit cards and travellers checks are readily accepted. |
