Hertha were established in 1892 and won their two Deutscher Meister in 1930 and 1931. Their address is Anschrift, Hanns-Braun-Strasse, Friesenhaus II, 14053 Berlin. Telephone (0 30) 30 09 28 0, Fax (0 30) 30 09 28 99 they can also be found on the web at http://www.herthabsc.deThe Olympiastadion Berlin is home to the city's most successful side, Hertha Berlin of the German Bundesliga and is steeped in history from the days on Nazi Germany and Hitlers leadership and is best remembered for Hitler snubbing black American athlete Jessie Owens during the Olympics held at the stadium.
Season 1998/99 was Hertha's most successful season, finishing 3rd in the league and entering the qualifying round of the Champions League, which they won moving on to the first round group stage, being in probably the hardest group along with Chelsea, AC Milan and Galatasaray. The Stadium holds around 75,000 and average attendances are around 50,000 to 65,000 depending on the opposition. There is usually no problem getting a match tickets with either pay at the gate or you can buy in advance from a number of outlets in the city centre. The Karstadt Sport department store near Zoo Station is one place that's ells match tickets but these are not available on match day. Ticket prices range from DM15 to DM75. The stadium is all-seater, but large sections are uncovered. The club produce their own match day magazine 'Wir Herthaner' which is available for DM2. There are hundred's of food stands around the ground selling all the usual foods. There are also lots of souvenir stands of course. In the ground you can get all kinds of food ranging from sausages, sandwiches and beer, in some parts of the ground beer is available on draft from barrels strapped to the sellers backs.
One thing lacking at the ground is visiting supporters due to the long journey most Bundesliga teams have to make to Berlin with Hansa Rostock being the exception, but this does not seem to effect the atmosphere inside the ground and if it does get a bit quiet the PA Announcer usually tries to whip up a bit of noise amongst the home fans.
You're probably best using public transport to make your way to the stadium, you can take either the U-Bahn, Line 2 towards Ruhleban and get off at Olympiastadion or take the S-Bahn, Line S5 or S75 also to Olympiastadion. There are also a number of trains that run to the ground and you can usually be back in the city centre within an hour of the end of the match.Apart from Hertha there are a number of other teams you can go to watch on your trip to Berlin, these being TeBe Berlin, Union Berlin and BFC Dynamo as well as the Amateur teams from Hertha and TeBe. A visit to Berlin wouldn't be complete without taking in the sights, the best of these being in the eastern part of the city. Berlin is also home to some of the best pubs and clubs in the world, pick up a copy of 'Tip' or 'Zitty' listings magazine to find out what's on. Many of the good clubs are around Kurfurstendamn, the main shopping street near Zoo Station. There a 1000's of bars to suit all tastes and you should also try and sample Berliner Pilsener and Berliner Kindl, which are the best of the local brews. A lot of hotels in Berlin have good weekend deals and a good way to see what's available is on the web, have a look at www.berlin.de and you can book a hotel online.
Berlin certainly seems a city worth checking out!
