William was born c.1846 in Wales. According to Robert Lewis Vigars William was an "Outfitter at Southport". At his marriage to Priscilla Vigars in 1874, witnessed by his ?brother Ebernezer, William was a "Woolen Draper" living at 40 Lord Street Liverpool. When their second child Marie was born in 1878 he was a "Clothier" resident at 107 Sefton Street Southport where they had moved within the previous 2 years. In the family are living at 67 Hampton Road North Meols (Southport) Lancashire & William is a Merchant Tailor "employing 30 Men, 3 Boys & 20 Women". By the time Probate is granted for his father-in-law's will he is a Merchant Tailor at 2 Bold Street Liverpool.
