This work actually arose when I wanted to show students how to compose melodies which fit with chords. I find that students are unable to write convincing melodies, but that is another story.
We took the chord sequence C Am F G from that well-known piece which nearly everyone can sing or has played on a piano at some stage [Hogay Carmichael's "Heart and Soul"]. In groups, students composed several bars of music to fit with the chords and I helped with rhythmic notation as required.
The "normal" tune is on page 11 of NEW Music Matters Book 2 (Heinemann). You could even use that as a theme, regard your pupils' contributions as episodes and, bob's your uncle, you have a rondo (of a sort).
Here are our results. Enjoy! [Year 10 and CJA November 2003]
