A note about these web pages [Top]
The main pages (which you can select from the menu above) should all use your default font - it was quicker to write them that way. On my PC this is Times New Roman which I find difficult to read if the font size is too small. I suggest you increase the font to the most comfortable size.
Serial music is a big topic and I do not claim to be any kind of expert! You will have to use these pages in the way which suits you. If you have any comments please email me.

As you know, to download a file you right-click on the links below.
WORKSHEETS
These web pages are based on worksheets I produced for my GCSE class. I like to use Lotus WordPro but I can convert to Microsoft Word. You will need to have Windings Font which comes with Windows. Select either a Lotus file or a Word file. You will also need Blank Matrix sheets [ Lotus format Word .doc ], although you may just decide to use the Spreadsheet below.
I have developed a Spreadsheet which will calculate the 47 other versions of an original row (P, I, R and RI) entered by the user. Originally developed in Lotus 1-2-3 I concerted it to Excel in 2004/5
Click HERE to download it. Click HERE to view some screenshots.
To download the instructions for using the Lotus version (as a text file) click HERE.The Excel version can be downloaded HERE.

Dan Cavanagh's Java Script Note Row converter. It will generate a row, or you can input your own. One click and a matrix of all the row forms appears. It will print out OK from your browser. I found it having started work on my own Spreadsheet version which I still need because we are not 'on line' in the Music Department. There is yet another one HERE on a mathematics site! Scroll to the bottom of the menu. Some of my material was inspired by this excellent article. I have sent an email to the writer but have not had a reply. Ricci Adams Excellent Matrix Generator On his pretty fantastic site! Anton Webern An impressive site, but takes a while to load. Arnold Schoenberg You could also try the Schirmer site for a brief biography. Why we are still afraid of Schoenberg I came across this but I have yet to read it. The title grabbed me! Alban Berg The Classical Music Pages. And try this excellent site.

EXAMPLE ONE This is a short piece using just the Prime form of a row.
EXAMPLE TWO This is a long piece using various form of the row (each row has a label on the score). As much as anything, this piece demonstrates that there is more to writing a 12-tone piece than meets the eye. It is not particularly stylistic and contains stylistic features 12-tone composers tend not to use! The title "Lec-x-ede" is just Edexcel backwards.
EXAMPLE THREE is actually an AS level example.
