There is a Theme (T) and five variations (1 - 5) in this piece.
(Do not tell the students, yet, that the music is Theme and Variations by Schumann.)
Hear a MIDI file of the Music (Not perfect but the best I've got time to do)
1 There are 4 beats in each bar. Is the speed of the music Lento, Moderato or Allegro?
2 The music is in a minor key except for which variation? (Careful with your numbering)
3 What word describes the texture of the theme?
4 Give a suitable name to the section heard after the 5th variation.
5 Which variation uses triplets?
6 In which variation is the theme heard in the left hand?
7 Listen to the harmony of variation 1. When compared to the harmony of the theme is it (a) totally different; (b) significantly different; (c) similar; (d) the same?
8 In which variation is the theme heard in an inner part?
