Page 5: Figured Bass - Seventh Chords MENU

There are 3 pages about 7th chords on Ricci Adams' site but certain aspects may confuse you.  Teoria [see Reference and scroll down] has some good pages.  Hopefully, if I explain 7ths well you will not need to visit those sites!

A seventh chord has 4 notes and so there are 4 positions. Once again, the figures tell us which notes we need by stating the interval of each required note from the given bass note*.  In common with what you have seen before, whilst every note can be figured, only some of the numbers are actually used. [* Although these 4 chords are written in the Treble clef, we still call the lowest the bass]

7 6 4 4
  5 3 2
Only the 7 is
used for the
Root position
The 3 is taken for
granted in the
1st inversion
2nd inversion 3rd inversion

If any non-diatonic notes are needed then the appropriate accidental is placed next to the figure (on the left, usually, but on the right according to the Associated Board).  If a note to be changed does not appear in the abbreviated chord description, it obviously has to do so if it is affected by the figures.  Here are some examples.
