Web Help FAQ: Online Resources

The Web Help FAQ's on-line resources section has now got such a range of resources, that I think it warrants a web page of its own.

Whether your an advanced web developer or just starting with web pages, you should find something of use here.

Every web site listed is not just any old site to do with the subject. They are what I, personally, or other LineOne members recommend.

Browsers

A collection of web browsers and web browser resources

Opera 5
This is my favourite browser.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5
The most popular browser available.

MSN Explorer (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6)
Microsoft's latest web browser. Be careful, this is still in beta, and being Microsoft, probably full of bugs.

Microsoft Internet Explorer 3
You may want to look at IE3 for testing purposes, but different versions of IE will not run together on the same computer.

Netscape 6
Netscape's latest browser.

Netscape Navigator 2X, 3X and 4X
All previous versions of Netscape Navigator have been archived. NN3 and NN4 are still fairly popular.

Mozilla
A very powerful browser. Renders advanced features as well as, if not better than Opera5, IE5 and NN6

K Meleon
A new, small, fast, open source browser for Windows. Looks like IE, but uses Netscapes Gecko engine.

Konqueror 2 (Linux)
Along with Opera 5, this is one of the best browser available for Linux.

NCSA Mosaic
An old text browser which supports images :), useful for testing no-frames content (Gdad's favourite).

Lynx (precompiled win32 version)
An old text text browser which is still in development.

Your web page should not just work in the latest version of Internet Explorer...

FTP programs

BlueZone Free FTP
An excellent free FTP program. Its clear, easy to use GUI make it quick and easy to use.

Leech FTP, also see www.frogman.org.uk for Frogman's tutorial.
A decent free FTP program, but I prefer Bluezone .

Cute FTP
A very good FTP client. Beware though, the free version is spy ware.

HTML Editors

Macromedia Dreamweaver
The leading WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) web page editor, but expensive.

Microsoft FrontPage Express
A free, easy to use WYSIWG web page editor, which is ideal for beginners.

1st Page 2000
A free HTML specific text editor. This is my favourite and was used to create this web page.

Arachnophilia
Another free HTML specific text editor

If none of these HTML editors are for you, there are lots more available at DaveCentral and CNET's download centre.

Image Editors

Paint Shop Pro
A very popular image editor. Costs about £100.

Adobe Photoshop
The industries leader is very powerful and expenive.

The GIMP Linux, *nix version / Windows version
The Linux version of The GIMP was used to create the images for this site, because it's just as powerful as Jasc Paint Shop Pro, but free. I haven't tried the windows version, but its worth a look, being free.

Macromedia Fireworks
Macromedia's stab at image editing software.

Micrografx Picture Publisher
I haven't tried this, but Horizontal says it's good.
