Fight or Flight

Without this response to stress, to allow us to escape from danger, our lives would be boring (we feel excited because of the stress hormones released).

  • The brain goes on 'Red Alert' produces the stress hormones adrenalin and nor-adrenalin
  • The muscles tense for action
  • Pupils of the eye dilate to see danger more easily
  • Heart beats faster to pump blood to the muscles and raises the blood pressure
  • We breathe quicker and more deeply to get more oxygen for the muscles and brain
  • The liver releases glucose to provide extra energy for muscles
  • Our digestion stops so our mouth goes dry and our sphincters close, watch out for this one!
  • Our immune system slows down

The last is one of the most critical factors in the development of illness.
