Tangley Level Crossing
On the main road through Chilworth, Surrey was Tangley Level Crossing, and I used to spend many happy times talking to the crossing keepers there, some of the names that I remember are, Charlie Greenaway, Harold Whittaker, Bill Seymour and Sid Roles, and they had some stories to tell. The crossing gates were then hand operated and when they were closed to road traffic for a train to pass, quite a few queues used to form. I can vividly remember one occasion when The Chilworth Fire Engine was held up, and as soon as the last carriage had passed, the firemen jumped over the gates to open them so they could hurry off to the fire that they were attending. The Chilworth Fire Station was along the driveway to Tillingbourne School.
The old wooden hand operated level crossing gates were replaced by automatic half barriers on 11th July 1974.
