What is Baptism? (Christening)

The Baptism (christening) of children or adults is a time of great joy and celebration. Baptising people is something that Jesus said we should do if we want to live the Christian life. Following Jesus’ teaching involves loving people, no matter who they are, and wanting to learn more about God who created us in his likeness. It is the time when people become members of a very special family – the family of the Church. Like all families we are excited to welcome brand new members and the worldwide church also rejoices that you bring your child or yourself to be baptised.

What Happens?

In the service the minister makes the sign of the cross, with holy oil blessed by the Bishop, of those being baptised – it is a sign of belonging to Jesus. Water is sprinkled over the child – the actual baptism – sins are washed away to be replaced by the goodness of God’s Spirit. Parents and godparents also make public promises to help the child grow up to know God. It is a big responsibility for parents and so godparents are chosen who will take an interest in helping with this. At St John’s every effort is taken to help parents who enquire about Baptism because it is only the beginning of something very special.

Who can be baptised at St John the Baptist?

Anyone can be baptised provided that they have not been baptised before and live within the parish boundaries of Wales and Kiveton. St John the Baptist Church exercises a pastoral care over all those who live within the parish boundaries. It is your church and we are delighted to baptise children of any age (or adults). The marital status of the parents is not a bar because it is the child who is being baptised.

Who will take the Service and when does it take place?

Rev Gary Schofield, the Vicar will normally conduct the service.
Baptisms usually take place at 5.00pm on the 3rd Sunday of each month and 12. 15pm on the 4th Sunday of the month.

What does it cost?

Baptism is completely free! Our God is generous with his love and the church also likes to be generous at this happy time. Your child will receive a baptism candle – this reminds us to show God’s love and light at all times – and a certificate to mark this special day.

How do I arrange a Baptism?

Visit the Parish Office on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month between 6.00 pm
and 7.00 pm where details such as your child’s name, date of birth, address and godparents names are taken. Your family will be invited to our Sunday Special Service on the 2nd Sunday of the month at 11am. This is an informal child friendly act of worship where you will see more of the life of St John’s. Those wishing to book a Baptism date can do so after this service when coffee and tea are being served.
