Many of us cringe at the idea of being identified as a member of the Mothers’ Union, picturing in our minds very elderly ladies doing knitting and making jam. However, while trying to think of a way for a sociable group of people to meet, do interesting things, meet interesting folk, eat, drink and generally have a good time, while also proclaiming our Christian faith and belief in family life, in association with over one million people worldwide - we just couldn’t come up with a better alternative for a new social group at church!
The Mothers union has, for a number of years, been trying to bring its name up-to-date but re-naming doesn’t always help (for example:- Consignia - it will always remain the Post Office!) What’s in a name? Well, in the case of the Mothers’ Union over 125 years of good work and fellowship. So perhaps instead of trying to change the name we should try and change people’s concept of that name, making the MU name synonymous with good work and good times in Wales and Kiveton Park.
We have held two meeting recently at which 40 –50 people have attended together with Norma Priest, the Diocesan President. We will be known as St John the Baptist Church, Wales and Kiveton Park MU. We will, as does every MU, welcome members from every walk of life, married, unmarried, divorced, young, not so young - and even men! Because what the MU stands for is inclusivity not exclusivity!! There will be an enrolment service in the near future at which people will officially become MU members and when our branch will officially restart.
Many of you already have so many commitments, how will you fit in more? Don’t worry, become a member and take part when you can. Please phone Margaret Shearstone or Vicar Gary Schofield on 01909 771 111 for more details.
MOTHERS UNION PRAYER
Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
who gave marriage to be the source of blessing,
we thank you for family life, with all its joys and sorrows.
May we know your presence and peace in our homes,
fill them with you love and use them to your glory.
Bless all who are married and every parent and child.
Pour out upon us your Holy Spirit,
that we may truly love and serve you.
Bless the members of the Mothers’ Union throughout the world,
unite us in prayer and worship, in love and service,
that strengthened by your grace,
we may see to do your will;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
