Languages and Travel I thoroughly enjoy travelling, especially by train in Europe. I do think that travelling by train is the only really civilised way to travel, even in Britain, despite recent problems. The best place to get information on almost all European trains is the German railway web page (even for other countries!). Travelling by Eurostar is an excellent way to get into Northern Europe from Britain, and Rail Europe will sell you tickets on to other parts of Europe. You can get some really good deals if you book early, even travelling First Class for a reasonable cost.
I use the German railway page for getting times on most trains, but if you are outside Germany, it doesn't give you the cost. To get the cost of trains in Britain use The Train Line . You can also buy tickets on that page, but I can never plan journeys in Britain far enough in advance for that! I like to travel on the spur of the moment. I think it is silly to travel to a country where you don't know any of the language. The web is a good place to get some language help. Foreign languages for travellers is a site containing lots of language notes. One thing the web is really good for, is on-line dictionaries. Just type in the word in one language, and you get it in another of your choice. This is the best English German dictionary, and it's useful when reading German literature (This site also has a lot of useful general information on Germany). If you find yourself tongue-tied when speaking English, Roget's Internet Thesaurus may help.
