The FilmCentre cinema in Chandos Place, St.
Austell which opened its doors as The Odeon on July 11th 1936 celebrates
it's 70th anniversary shortly.
The cinema has a proud record of continuous service to the people of St. Austell and mid-Cornwall and has delighted millions over the 70 years. To celebrate this unique occasion the Directors, Management and Staff of WTW Cinemas are screening a special presentation of the 1945 Ealing wartime classic "JOHNNY FRENCHMAN" (U Cert) which stars Francoise Rosay, Tom Walls and Patricia Roc. The film was shot on location in Mevagissey. There will be two performances of "JOHNNY FRENCHMAN" on July 11th 2006, firstly at 4:30pm which will be on a ticket sale basis (£4 per person) and a second performance at 7:30pm which includes a buffet and is by special invitation. If you would like to be considered for the second performance at 7:30pm, some seats have been kept back for a public ballot and applications should be made in writing to the General Manager, The FilmCentre, Chandos Place, St. Austell as soon as possible. All proceeds from the day will be donated to Mount Edgecumbe Hospice. This 70th anniversary of the opening on July 11th is also likely to be the final 'grand' event at the cinema following Restormel Borough Council's decision to compulsory purchase the building for demolition this forthcoming autumn in the Town Centre redevelopment scheme. The cinema will trade as normal for locals and visitors alike during the summer months and all the top summer releases such as "OVER THE HEDGE", "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST", "CARS", "STORMBREAKER" etc. will be screened in July and August. |
