Just a few days before the Oscars Truro's Plaza cinema has won its own highly-prized award.

The four screen picture-house in Lemon Street was named best UK independent by a panel of industry experts.

David Williams, managing director of Cornwall-based firm WTW Cinemas, traveled up to Glasgow to pick up the prized gong at a ceremony last week.

The award marks a sterling turnaround for the cinema, which before being taken over seven years ago, was in the hands of receivers and had been closed down by Carrick for licensing infringements.

"Its the first time a Westcountry cinema has won the award," said Mr. Williams. "There are 550 independents in the country and we have been named the best."

Since the takeover a large-scale refurbishment project has brought the Plaza's interior up to scratch while the WTW team has worked hard to bring the best films to the county.

Mr. Williams was keen to praise his staff who he feels are largely responsible for the cinema winning the award.

"They are the ones that do the work" he said.

"If they are enthusiastic it does make a difference and that enthusiasm is generated to patrons."

"We shall have our own celebrations certainly."

The award will be put on show in the cinema foyer for guests and staff to view.

It is not the only time The Plaza has been recognized by the British Film Industry.

The UK Film Council recently pledged to install a new digital projector at the cinema.

WTW now plan to build on there success by constructing two new cinemas in the South West.
