News (2001): LineOne has been bought by Tiscali and it's changed quite a lot. This page has been updated, but if any of it is out-of-date, please let me know!

If you set up an account with LineOne, you get:

• 50 megabytes of webspace
• an e-mail address
• Free technical support by e-mail
• A "free" CD every month or so
• Inclusion in the Members' Directory (optional) (Actually I'm not sure they still do this)

The service offered by LineOne includes the "Define Your Own Universe", which is a point-and-click system where you can customise your own web magazine in effect, so if you like horoscopes then horoscopes you will get, and if you like stock exchange quotes, then stock exchange quotes you will get, and if you like news/weather, then news/weather you will get, etc.

The LineOne service is very much a COMMUNITY principle of involvement and user-friendliness. The style appeals to a lot of people, and it's worth looking into to see if it is compatible with your way of thinking.

There is also a SurfTime option where you pay a monthly fee for unmetered access. To see more about this, look at LineOne SurfTime. This costs £12/month offpeak, and so if you are spending more than 40p/day on phone calls (link here to find out if you are) then SurfTime is going to save you money!

There are very few bad things to say about LineOne and these are minor points, but they'd better be mentioned anyway:

• When you upload your files to your webspace, you must check them all to make sure they have been uploaded. Occasionally they fail to upload first time. This is especially important as any pages which end up nonexistent will not just say "404 error" but will divert into Tiscali's all-selling website! However, with vigilance it is possible to completely overcome the problem by checking all files have uploaded properly!
• If you try to upload any file which is bigger than 200Kb, it will get slower and slower, and if it's over 500Kb you may NEVER get it uploaded. (The same applies to huge e-mails. But the question there is whether the recipient(s) will thank you!). Note: This may no longer apply to uploading now that Tiscali have taken over.
• You will receive spam. Not a huge amount, but some. Since Tiscali bought LineOne, my LineOne e-mail addresses have received a variety of items which I can trace to source. However, let's not knock it! Tiscali have got to make money, and they're by far not the worst on this spam situation.
• LineOne/Tiscali's website is not readable by some people whose eyesight is poor. Does this matter? YES! It does! If your eyesight is poor, it's not fair that you can't see it. Plus, even if you can see perfectly well now, you can't guarantee you'll always have good sight.
